Leviticus 20
OFFERING TO MOLECH
“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Say to the Israelites: “Any Israelite or any foreigner residing in Israel who sacrifices any of his children to Molek is to be put to death. The members of the community are to stone him.”’” (Leviticus 20 v 1 – 2).
We may wonder what relevance this has for us. On the surface it seems to apply only to the people of Israel when offerings to Molek were common and fashionable.
An offering to Molek began by heating up a fire inside the large, hollow brass image of Molek. The child would be placed in the arms of the image and roll into the fire, where it would it would burn and die. As far as I am aware, this practise is not followed today. So how does it apply to us?
A child given to Molek was certain to die. The children of the Israelites were people whom God had redeemed for himself. The lives of Israelite children should have been dedicated to God. But when a child was offered to Molek, the life of the child was offered to a detestable idol. Any future life, or choice the child could make to turn to God, was taken away by the person making the sacrifice when the child was killed.
We don’t offer our children to Molek today. But do we get them so involved in other pursuits – sport, education, music, careers, etc – that they push God aside, resulting in their lives being dedicated to the idols of this world instead of to the God who redeems our lives? Are we taking away their choice to serve God and to live?
Let’s make sure we give our children every chance we can to help them know the Lord. Let’s help them give their lives to the God who will redeem them and give them life.
May our God’s grace be with us and our children this week.
With love in our Lord

Be Still

I decided to embrace the opportunity to have a ‘be still’ morning. It’s actually not an easy thing to do. My natural tendency is towards ‘doing.’ I look for fulfilment by doing. I find distraction in doing. I find relief from potential boredom by doing. I look for entertainment by doing. I seek worth and identity in doing. I was humbled to find that… read the rest at www.thinkythings.com/sharon

Matchmaker
Robert’s attempt at a romantic short story.
David opened the door to his grandmother’s room to witness her being kissed by a stranger. Little did David know that the kiss he saw would change the course of his life.
