Proverbs 18
MONEY OR YOUR WIFE?
I was talking to a friend at work who had been going out with his girlfriend for a long time. His friends were starting to hint that they should get married. As we discussed this, he confessed that he was waiting until he was financially secure to get married.
As I read Proverbs 18, I discovered two proverbs that might help in my friend’s dilemma. Here they are:
“A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination.” (Proverbs 18 v 11 ESV). And, “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favour from the LORD.” (v 22).
Finding and marrying a wife is a good thing. The reason a married man finds favour from the LORD is that marriage is part of God’s plan for most of us, and it is a parable of the marriage of Christ and his bride. But will we ever be financially ready for marriage? Maybe some of us will be. Though for me, after being married for over thirty years, I still feel like I am not very well financially prepared. But the wise man says that money is only a security in our imagination.
Let’s not put aside the blessing of God in marriage for the sake of an imaginary fortress of money. God provides for those he loves. I can testify to that!
Live out God’s plan for your life, because with money, the time may never be right.
May we trust in the Lord with all our hearts this week.
With love in our Lord
