Celebrating 25 years of Thinky Things!
Luke 20
BROKEN OR CRUSHED?
We have no choice about it, but we do have a choice about how it happens. At some stage we are all going to be broken. So much for the strong, bullet-proof hero who thinks he is out to save the world. That was actually Jesus’ job, but we ourselves need saving. But we can’t be saved when we are proud and strong. We need to be able to admit our weakness and honest about our need for a saviour. That’s why we need to be broken.
The choice we have is to fall on Jesus and be broken to pieces, or to be crushed beyond recognition by him. This is what Jesus said: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone … Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.” (Luke 20 v 17 – 18).
Jesus is the cornerstone. Personally, I would rather be broken to pieces than be crushed into dust. If you also would rather fall on Jesus and be broken to pieces rather than be crushed, then let us humble ourselves and give our broken pieces to him. Let’s fall on him and trust ourselves to his mercy rather than face his wrath.
May God grant us honesty and humility this week.
