Abraham journeyed to the promised land. So did all Israel as they came out of Egypt with Moses. After the exile, Zerubbabel and then Ezra led the people back into the promised land. And right now, we are on the same journey, not literally walking toward Jerusalem, but seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

The record of the return of the Jews with Ezra has an inspiring lesson for us as we journey to the promised land. It is found in the genealogy of those who left Babylon to go to Jerusalem. Fifteen people are mentioned by name in Ezra 8 v 1 – 14, and most of them are recorded in a similar way to this: “Of the sons of Zattu, Shecaniah the son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men.” (Ezra 8 v 5 ESV).

Shecaniah the son of Jahaziel brought 300 men with him. No everyone brought 300 men, but they all brought some. It was the same with Abraham who brought his family and trained men; with the Israelites coming out of Egypt who brought a mixed multitude with them; and same again during the return under Zerubbabel.

Let’s be the same. Let’s not head to the promised land alone, but bring people with us so that God’s kingdom can be filled up.

May we reach out to others with the good news this week.

With love in our Lord,
Robert
