When were you last invited to a party hosted by the king, the president, the prime minister or even the mayor? I would imagine the answer would be never. To get an invitation to that sort of party, one has to be in the right circles, have money, power or influence, or even pay for your ticket.

King Ahasuerus was different. This is what he did after is 180-day celebration: “And when these days were completed, the king gave for all the people present in Susa, the citadel, both great and small, a feast lasting for seven days in the court of the garden of the king’s palace.” (Esther 1 v 5 ESV). It was a feast for everyone. Even you and I would have been included if we were there.

It is this show of hospitality Jesus wants us to show toward the people around us – both small and great. He said, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” (Luke 14 v 12 – 14).

So when we throw a party or have people around for dinner, let’s not be so selective that certain people would never be invited. Instead let us do as Ahasuerus did, and Jesus said to do, and invite both small and great.

May we show the love of God to each other this week.

With love in our Lord,
Robert
