Revelation 17 v 3 – 6
THE LOOK OF SIN
What does sin look like? A sinful woman is described in Revelation. She is the picture of sinfulness. She is described as a great prostitute. John says,
“I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. The name written on her forehead was a mystery: BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.” (Revelation 17 v 3 – 6).
Unless we have a preconceived idea about her, this woman looks very attractive. She is sexually appealing, extremely rich and flaunts her riches. She has lived an exciting and daring life, making her appeal to those who have a sense of adventure.
Sin is attractive. That’s what sin looks like. She is exciting. But her mind is not on God and she will be destroyed. Let’s not give in to how attractive she might seem, but instead let us follow the Lamb wherever he goes.

Eyes Fixed on Jesus
“…And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith…” Hebrews 12 v 1 – 2.
I was walking across a field recently. I lined up my exit point, and began walking in that direction. I day dreamed while I walked, watching the ground; not concentrating on where I was going. When I looked up, I was surprised to see how far off track I had gone from my exit point. I had begun walking in a direct line to where I was headed, but lack of watching had sent me in a different direction.
It got me thinking about the instruction in Hebrews 12 to “Fix our eyes on Jesus”. Wandering off track from my original destination highlighted for me how important it is to not just start out in the right direction, but keep my sights fixed on the end goal. It’s easy to think we are going the right way, but without constant checking in, we could find ourselves (like I did), rather off track.
How do we fix our eyes on Jesus? Here are some suggestions:
- Fix our eyes on Jesus by getting to know his character, and choosing him to be a friend and companion.
- Fix our eyes on Jesus by actively following his example and commands; using them as a moral compass for our lives.
- Fix our eyes on Jesus, holding on to the promise that he is the Good Shepherd who is always seeking the best for his flock – leaning into, and trusting, his deep love.
- Fix our eyes on Jesus as our Saviour, The Way, The Truth, The Life. Knowing him to be the one who shows us our Heavenly Father.
- Fix our eyes on Jesus, believing he’s walked in this world before us, experiencing all the pain, sorrow and temptation that life can throw – yet overcame it all.
- Fix our eyes on Jesus, knowing that he’s cheering us on to live a life that’s full of good fruit.
As another year draws to its close, and a new one is about to begin, let us make a resolution to fix our eyes more firmly on Jesus – so that we can stay on the right track!
May God be with you in the year ahead.
With love in our Lord,
Robert and Sharon Prins
