It’s been a long wait, and for those of us in New Zealand, it looks like we will have to wait a bit longer because the Kiwi ones landed last week, but they still have to process through customs.

BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL

It can seem a lot more fun and much more profitable to carry a grudge when someone seems to deliberately mess up. It might be niggly comments from your wife, the attitude shown by your husband, the way your employer takes you for granted, the way you or someone you know has been treated at church, or that you were not selected for the sports team.

I thought it would be better to hold a grudge too—until I discovered God’s grace and forgiveness toward me. In being able to pass on the same love and forgiveness to people who annoy me, I have discovered how much freedom and joy being merciful has given me. And it was there in black and white in my Bible all the time: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” (Matthew 5 v 7 ESV).

Mercy doesn’t stop at overlooking resentment, grudges, sin or agitation. Mercy is about not getting the punishment we deserve. It is about dragging people away from death, saving them and giving them the hope of life. What a feeling of absolute joy it is to have a part in changing lives for good!

Blessed can also be translated ‘Happy’. “Happy are the merciful.” How true that is!

May God fill us with joy through the year ahead.
