It’s been a long wait, and for those of us in New Zealand, it looks like we will have to wait a bit longer because the Kiwi ones landed last week, but they still have to process through customs.

Genesis 12
WITH THEM BUT NOT LIKE THEM

God had told Abram to go and live in the land of Canaan. In other places we learn that the people living in Canaan at the time were very wicked, which is why God planned to destroy them and give the land to Abram and his descendants.

As Abram arrived in Canaan, this is what we read: “When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.” (Genesis 12 v 5 – 6 ESV).

Abram was a man of faith and the Canaanites were people who didn’t honour God at all. As Abram lived among the Canaanites, he didn’t let their ways rub off on him. Later on, God said of Abraham, “For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just.” (Genesis 18 v 19 NIV).

The lesson of Abram is this: Although we might live among wicked or immoral people, we don’t have to be like them. Let us live lives that are pleasing to God no matter who we rub shoulders with.

May we live lives that are pleasing to God today.
