JOY IN DARK TIMES

While the ministry of Jesus might have had some highlights, the end of it was pretty miserable. Jesus was rejected, his disciples fled, he was beaten, tried, arrested, hated, and no one came to his rescue. Where was the joy in all that? After his death it was his enemies who were rejoicing.

I wonder if Jesus had this proverb in mind as he went through those last few days: “The hope of the righteous brings joy, but the expectation of the wicked will perish.” (Proverbs 10 v 28 ESV). It seems the writer to the Hebrews believed he did. He said that Jesus, “for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12 v 2 ESV).

Jesus had hope even in that terrible time. His hope kept him joyful. And even though his enemies were rejoicing, their expectation perished as soon as Jesus was resurrected. Their joy would have dried up completely.

In the same way Jesus found joy in the hope set before him, let us set our hope in God so that we can have joy even when times are bad.
