John 9
WE MUST DO THE WORK

The disciples of Jesus had asked a question about a man who was born blind. As Jesus answered the question, he turned it into a practical lesson. We find out later that it was a Sabbath day on which the question was asked and the miracle of healing for the blind man took place. The Sabbath was the day of the week God commanded his people to rest.
This is what Jesus said to his disciples: “As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9 v 4 – 5).
Even on a Sabbath there was work to be done. Even on a Sabbath there was daylight to work by. But Jesus didn’t say, “I must do the works of him who sent me,” he said, “We must do the works of him who sent me.” He was speaking to his disciples and his followers. Some of them were there at the time, while others, like us, have read his words since. It is our job to carry on the work Jesus was given.
Jesus was not talking about working to make money. His work was to save lives, to help people, to point them to God, to show them the way, the truth and the life. So let’s work the works of God while it is day so that we can do what God wants us to do. Let’s do as much as we can before the night comes when no one can work.
May our lives be productive for God this weekend.
With love in our Lord,
Robert
