Deuteronomy 22
CASUAL SEX

Casual sex is well promoted in our culture. The Internet, television and movies are full of it. Dating sites are openly promoted, and in most areas of society it is considered normal — almost expected. But though we live in a society that has normalised casual sex, let’s not lose sight of God’s standards.

In Deuteronomy 22 verses 13 to 30, God gave Israel some laws concerning sexual immorality. Punishment for breaking these laws were quite severe, but it would have meant that sexually transmitted infections, babies without fathers, and other consequences of casual sex, were not an issue at all.

This is my summary of the standards God expected:
A husband and wife should be virgins when they get married.
In no circumstances was anyone to have sex with anyone else’s husband or wife.
Even people who were engaged were covered by the same laws  that covered those who were married.
And if two unmarried people had sex, they were to get married and were not allowed to divorce — ever.

Even in the New Testament we learn that we are to abstain from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4 v 3). Let’s not take on the standards of the world or expect less of each other because ‘everyone is doing it’. Instead let us raise our standards to God’s standards and pass on those expectations to others.

May we live holy and godly lives this week.

With love in our Lord,
Robert
