JEREMIAH 36
EVERYONE HEARD
Some people wanted the word of God from Jeremiah to be stopped. They believed no one should hear the revelations Jeremiah had from God, and they thought that their own imaginings were a much better spiritual diet. The threats against Jeremiah were so bad that he couldn’t even be seen in public for fear of what might happen.
So when Jeremiah was given his next prophecy, he got Baruch to write it down and read it to the people. One of the officials heard it, and then all the officials wanted to hear it (just out of interest, of course), so Baruch read it to them. Then they took the message to the king, and although he cut it up and burned it in the fire, the king heard it too. So the word of God that was supposed to have been restricted ended up being heard by everyone from the slaves to the king.
When Jesus spoke about the last days, he told us about the persecution we would face and that we would present the gospel before kings. People won’t want to hear the word of God any more than they did in Jeremiah’s day, but they will force us to tell them about it, and they will be left with no excuse when the day of judgment comes.
Like Jeremiah, what we preach to our neighbours could well go all the way to us witnessing before kings and officials. Let’s just make sure that, like Jeremiah, we are willing to be used to spread God’s word.
