Luke 12
THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

The Day of Atonement begins today (Sunday 20 September 2026) at sundown. It is the most holy day in the Jewish calendar, the day in which Israel were to repent of their sins and be forgiven by God.

Luke 12 doesn’t mention the Day of Atonement, but it does talk a lot about getting right with God, sin, forgiveness, and making a new start in life.

We all want to cover up our sins. It would be nice to keep them a secret so no one else knows about them, but Jesus said, “Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.” (Luke 12 v 3ESV). Having my secrets proclaimed from the rooftops sounds like my worst nightmare. The alternative is to confess our sins now so we have no secrets to be exposed. Better now than later.

Jesus also said, “Do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! (v 4 – 5). The consequences of confessing our sins now is nothing to being unforgiven at the judgement.

Make today a day of confession So we can be ready for the day of judgement.

May we rededicate ourselves to God this week.
