Acts 24
GRATITUDE FOR GOVERNMENT

As Paul’s trial before Felix began, Tertullus set off the proceedings as the spokesman for the prosecutors. Instead of getting straight to the case, Tertullus began by getting on side with the judge. This is what he said: “Since through you we enjoy much peace, and since by your foresight, most excellent Felix, reforms are being made for this nation, in every way and everywhere we accept this with all gratitude.” (Acts 24 v 2 – 3 ESV).

Maybe Tertullus’ speech was all flattery and, knowing current opinion of any government in power, complaints come much more readily toward government than gratitude. But the example of Tertullus is one we should all learn to follow. Not for flattery, but for real gratitude.

It is God who has set particular leaders and governments over us. We should be praying for them and giving thanks for the benefits that come to us through those leaders, no matter how small or how few they seem. Like Tertullus, let’s look for things to be grateful for in our governments and leaders, developing an attitude of gratitude and giving thanks to God for the people he has provided to serve our nation.

May we always be thankful.

With love in our Lord,
Robert
